Meningitis Press Conference Schedule

Effective January 1, 2012, The “Jamie Schanbaum and Nicolis Williams Act,” requires all college students under age 30 and attending class on a Texas campus to be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis, prior to school entry (Senate Bill 1107). Healthcare leaders and advocates will host a press conference to remind Texans about the law. Speakers will discuss meningitis and the vaccine that prevents it, and the impact on public health. In addition, The Immunization Partnership will introduce a PSA that will launch a statewide awareness campaign. Representatives from Texas Children’s Hospital will also unveil an educational video that features meningitis survivor Jamie Schanbaum and the parents of Nicolis Williams (Texas college student who lost his life to the disease).

Houston Endowment, Inc. has supported The Immunization Partnership since its inception. In 2003, the foundation gave a $1 million grant to establish a citywide registry to record childhood immunizations. Since then, the registry has been transitioned to the State and TIP has evolved into an organization that seeks to address both the root cause of low immunization rates and the far-reaching policy issues, which impact immunization rates in Texas. As it was in the beginning, the support provided by Houston Endowment, Inc. continues to be critical to TIP's growth and development as an organization. In 2010, Houston Endowment, Inc. generously approved a two-year grant which has enabled TIP to undertake a strategic initiative of capacity building and program growth. TIP Shake It Up Martini Party On September 15th, TIP hosted the Shake It Up Martini Party which was a huge success. Susan Krohn's lovely home was packed full of TIP supporters who sipped martinis shaken by our celebrity bartenders Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, Channel 13's Miya Shay, and Houston Dynamo President Chris Canetti. Our guests had the opportunity to hear from renowned author and speaker, Dr. Paul Offit, who discussed several timely immunization-related topics. Community Immunity: Coming to a Meeting Near You?

Community Immunity is a brief, 10 minute hands on and fun-filled activity that engages audiences by demonstrating the importance of immunization with colored cards indicating one's immunization status. After many participants expressed interest in receiving additional education on adult vaccines and the diseases they prevent, TIP collaborated with Texas Children's Hospital (TCH) to create a presentation that would not only provide further education to community members without background knowledge in immunization, but also a presentation specific to public health and healthcare workers to reinforce the immunization message. The presentation is known as the Community Immunity Adult Outreach (CIAO) Project and provides information for communities and healthcare workers, including an overview of the latest in immunization news, while continuing to stress the importance of herd immunity through the Community Immunity activity. What is Community Immunity? Community Immunity is a 10 minute, hands on and fun-filled activity that demonstrates the importance of immunization by using colored dots to represents an individuals immunization status. TIP set out to find a creative way to demonstrate how quickly disease spreads in today's society, and therefore piloted the Community Immunity exercise with Rotary Clubs around Houston, focusing on the flu and pertussis vaccines. Important Information for Students and School Officials: New Meningitis Vaccination Requirements Historically, school vaccination laws have played a key role in the prevention ande control of vaccine-preventable diseases in the United States. In 2009, the Texas Legislature passed the Jamie Schanbaum Act, requiring all students living in college dorms to be vaccinated against meningitis. Since its passage, two key events have necessitated the need for expansion in the law. In February 2011, a Texas A&M University student, Nicolis Williams, passed away after contracting bacterial meningitis. Nicolis did not live in a college dormitory; hence, the existing law did not apply to him.
