This tragedy followed a 2009 case in which Jamie Schanbaum, a sophomore at University of Texas at Austin, survived meningitis but became a double amputee as a result of the devastating disease. These families joined forces to secure the passage of Senate Bill 1107 by Senator Wendy Davis (D - Fort Worth) and Representative Charlie Howard (R - Pearland) which was recently signed into law by Governor Perry. The Jamie Schanbaum and Nicolis Williams Act will require college students to be vaccinated against meningitis prior...

<description> Houston Endowment, Inc. has supported The Immunization Partnership since its inception. In 2003, the foundation gave a $1 million grant to establish a citywide registry to record childhood immunizations. Since then, the registry has been transitioned to the State and TIP has evolved into an organization that seeks to address both the root cause of low immunization rates and the far-reaching policy issues, which impact immunization rates in Texas. As it was in the beginning, the support provided by Houston Endowment, Inc. continues to be critical to TIP&#39;s growth and development as an organization. In 2010, Houston Endowment, Inc. generously approved a two-year grant which has enabled TIP to undertake a strategic initiative of capacity building and program growth. This gift has allowed TIP to grow its three focus areas of Advocacy, Education, and Support of Immunization Information Systems and to hire a Fund Development Director to diversify the philanthropic...

Susan Krohn&#39;s lovely home was packed full of TIP supporters who sipped martinis shaken by our celebrity bartenders Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, Channel 13&#39;s Miya Shay, and Houston Dynamo President Chris Canetti. Our guests had the opportunity to hear from renowned author and speaker, Dr. Paul Offit, who discussed several timely immunization-related topics. It was truly a fabulous event and we were thrilled that so many people chose to share their evening with us to learn more about TIP&#39;s mission and our new individual giving campaign, The Big Shot Society. <title>Community Immunity: Coming to a Meeting Near You?</title>
<description> Community Immunity is a brief, 10 minute hands on and fun-filled activity that engages audiences by demonstrating the importance of immunization with colored cards indicating one&#39;s immunization status. After many participants expressed interest in receiving additional education on adult vaccines and the diseases they prevent, TIP collaborated with Texas Children&#39;s Hospital (TCH) to create a presentation that would not only provide further education to community members without background knowledge in immunization, but also a presentation specific to public health and healthcare workers to reinforce the immunization message. The presentation is known as the Community Immunity Adult Outreach (CIAO) Project and provides information for communities and healthcare workers, including an overview of the latest in immunization news, while continuing to stress the importance of herd immunity through the Community Immunity activity. Since March 2011,...

			<title>COMMUNITY IMMUNITY</title>
<description> What is Community Immunity? Community Immunity is a 10 minute, hands on and fun-filled activity that demonstrates the importance of immunization by using colored dots to represents an individuals immunization status. TIP set out to find a creative way to demonstrate how quickly disease spreads in today's society, and therefore piloted the Community Immunity exercise with Rotary Clubs around Houston, focusing on the flu and pertussis vaccines. Goal: The overarching goal is to educate community groups about the importance of getting immunized to protect individuals and communities from dangerous vaccine-preventable diseases. Community Immunity in Action! A Community Immunity Toolkit has been developed for trained Immunization Ambassadors, to conduct the exercise and take the show on the road. With the success of the pilot, Rotary was encouraged to develop a community campaign and now several Rotarians have been trained, having already presented to other...

			<title></title>
<description> Important Information for Students and School Officials: New Meningitis Vaccination Requirements Historically, school vaccination laws have played a key role in the prevention ande control of vaccine-preventable diseases in the United States. In 2009, the Texas Legislature passed the Jamie Schanbaum Act, requiring all students living in college dorms to be vaccinated against meningitis. Since its passage, two key events have necessitated the need for expansion in the law. In February 2011, a Texas A&amp;M University student, Nicolis Williams, passed away after contracting bacterial meningitis. Nicolis did not live in a college dormitory; hence, the existing law did not apply to him. In 2010, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) updated its meningococcal vaccination recommendations to include a booster dose at age 16 years to help protect individuals when the incidence of meningitis peaks, at 16-21...
