Event Description

We are excited to announce that the Community Immunity Luncheon 2013 benefiting The Immunization Partnership (TIP) will be held on April 11, 2013, at The Junior League of Houston.  Each year The Immunization Partnership hosts this special event to remind community leaders about the importance of immunization issues, raise funds for its programs, and honor those who have dedicated their careers to advancing immunizations.

Your involvement will help provide important resources for TIP’s community health programs and improve immunization rates in Texas.  We hope you’ll consider becoming table sponsors, purchasing tickets, or making a gift to The Immunization Partnership (For more details on sponsor levels please click here).  TIP and the medical community have had great success in improving our community’s immunization rates, but there’s still much to do.  As long as a single child becomes ill from a preventable illness, our job isn’t done.

Dr. David Oshinsky will serve as the Keynote Speaker and will receive the Ralph D. Feigin, M.D. Award at the 2013 Luncheon.  Dr. Oshinsky is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Polio: An American Story, an unbelievably gripping and powerful account of the race to find a cure for polio.  Additionally, we will present the Boettiger Award for Community Partnership to Deloitte for their generous and ongoing support of TIP, its programs and mission.

We look forward to seeing you at Community Immunity Luncheon 2013!

Biography

Dr. Oshinsky is the George Littlefield Professor of American History at The University of Texas at Austin.

“Polio: An American Story” details America’s obsession with the disease in the 1940s and 1950s. With no known cause and no available cure, polio was a frightening disease that held America in its grips until a vaccine was found. Oshinsky’s book examines the race between rival researchers Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin to find a cure. It notes that polio was actually a relatively uncommon disease, but was kept in the spotlight by an aggressive public relations campaign and unprecedented fund-raising efforts by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, which founded the March of Dimes.

Oshinsky is a leading historian of modern American politics and society and has been at the university since 2001. “Polio: An American Story” has received accolades from National Public Radio’s “Science Friday,” the News Hour with Jim Lehrer, the New York Times and other media outlets. He is also the author of “A Conspiracy So Immense: The World of Joe McCarthy” and “Worse Than Slavery: Parchman Farm and the Ordeal of Jim Crow Justice,” both of which won major prizes and were New York Times Notable Books.
