What is Community Immunity? Community Immunity is a 10 minute, hands on and fun-filled activity that demonstrates the importance of immunization by using colored dots to represents an individuals immunization status. TIP set out to find a creative way to demonstrate how quickly disease spreads in today’s society, and therefore piloted the Community Immunity exercise with Rotary Clubs around Houston, focusing on the flu and pertussis vaccines.
Goal: The overarching goal is to educate community groups about the importance of getting immunized to protect individuals and communities from dangerous vaccine-preventable diseases.
Community Immunity in Action! A Community Immunity Toolkit has been developed for trained Immunization Ambassadors, to conduct the exercise and take the show on the road.
With the success of the pilot, Rotary was encouraged to develop a community campaign and now several Rotarians have been trained, having already presented to other Rotary clubs, businesses, community groups, and faith-based organizations.
*To date, TIP Staff and Immunization Ambassadors have presented this exercise to over 4,100 individuals*
